Wivenhoe History Group: Researching the First World War

The recently formed Wivenhoe History Group sends the Society a copy of its monthly Newsletter by email.  We advertised one of their public Lectures last year.  Over a very short period of time they have become a very active Group, making a behind the scenes tour of the Essex Record Office and planning to visit The National Archives at Kew.  The Group is looking for a webmaster to build a permanent website.  They already have a temporary site.

In commemoration of the Centenary of the Great War the Group is researching the fallen of the village.  The Essex Society for Archaeology and History has been given permission to publish Ian Valentine’s preliminary Roll of Honour – and we are delighted to do so.

“One of our key objectives for the current year is to trace the lives of the men and women of Wivenhoe who served in the Great War of 1914-1918. Gill Strudwick has started the process with her group and will be pursuing the work when it next meets on 19th March. If we are going to achieve our aims, then we shall need to look at the surviving documents from that period. These can mainly be found at the Imperial War Museum and in The National Archives at Kew. The National Archives welcomes visitors whether as individuals or in a group.”
